5 SQN Squadron Unit Crest Patch Air Force
No. 5 Squadron was an essential part of the Royal Australian Air Force, serving various roles such as training, army cooperation, and functioning as a helicopter squadron. Originally established in 1917 in Britain as a training unit within the Australian Flying Corps, it prepared pilots for warfare on the Western Front. Over time, the squadron transitioned into a naval fleet cooperation unit until it was redesignated as No. 9 Squadron RAAF. During World War II, it was re-formed as an army cooperation squadron. By the mid-1960s, No. 5 Squadron had evolved into a helicopter squadron, a role it maintained until its disbandment in December 1989, which led to the establishment of the Australian Defence Force Helicopter Training School.
